Our Story

Doing Good in the Neighborhood

OUR STORY - The Gloria Jackson Day of Service began as an auxiliary of First Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, born out of a deep desire to be a positive force in the church’s Eastside community. Before its formation, the church led a yearly outreach known as Feeding the Homeless, later renamed the Community Dinner.

Started in the early 1990s, this all-church effort served the community for several years. Several key members—including Marie Reynolds, Bill Bryant, and most notably Gloria Jackson—played vital roles in organizing and implementing the dinner. Even after the event came to an end, Gloria Jackson maintained a strong desire to see the outreach revived.

After a period of time, a dedicated church member, Nannette Estell, felt called to reignite that spirit of service. Through her vision and commitment, the Gloria Jackson Day of Service was established—continuing the church’s mission to serve, uplift, and strengthen the community. Since 2023, the Gloria Jackson Day of Service has worked to expand its impact by introducing new events and programs that build upon the foundation of the Community Dinner.

Today, the organization has grown into a formal nonprofit, securing its 501(c)(3) status and transitioning into a broader movement dedicated to serving, empowering, and uplifting the community.
